New to rowing?
For those of you who are new to rowing, you will become part of either the women’s or men’s novice crew.
You will be shown basic rowing technique on ergos before you are sent out into a boat for the first time. From then your training will consist of a combination of land based and water based training with weights and circuit training sessions thrown in for good measure. Water outings will involve a mixture of exercises aimed at improving technique as well as race pieces and steady state rowing.
This years Men’s Novice Captain is Dan Clayton. He will work each and every novice hard until they are race fit, developing them into athletes who are prepared to compete and win. Every novice will get a chance to race and have a brilliant time at this club. Hardly anybody who joins this club has ever rowed before, so James welcomes everyone who wants to try their hand at the sport.
He says “Being part of this club will be the best thing you ever do during your time at Salford. The training is hard, and you will need determination, patience and a willing to learn, but the general fitness you will gain, the excitement of going to places like London and Henley to race, the great social side of the club, and the invaluable friends you will make.”
This year ’s Women’s Novice Captain is Georgie Stubbs, she plans to work with the novice rowers to get them up to scratch in time for their first race in November. She will then choose her crews carefully selecting only the best to compete in some of the years biggest races in her quest for victory.
She says ” I would recommend rowing to anyone, even if you’ve never done anything fitness related before as its a great way to build fitness and be involved in a club during your time at University. Yes it’s hard work but the experience you’ll gain far outweighs that. Whether you’re in it for the social side, the races or just something to do of a weekend, give rowing a go, you wont regret it!”
